Watchmen on the Walls

             “I have posted watchmen on your walls, O Jerusalem; they will never be silent day or night, You who call on the Lord, give yourselves no rest” (Isaiah 62:6 NIV84).

            Just as God appointed watchmen for the walls of Jerusalem, we who claim to be Christians are now the watchmen, not just for our nation, but for the millions who do not know Christ as Lord.  No nation, not even the United States of America, no political party, no human being can save us.  Christ is the only answer to a lost and dying world!

            We may see chaos all around us.  Sin, evil, anger, and detestable actions may have grown to what seems like a point of no return, but that is exactly what Paul warned Timothy about.

“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days.  People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” (II Timothy 3:1-4 NIV84). 

Sounds like it was ripped from today’s headlines, doesn’t it?  We are living in the last days.  It may not be this week, or next year, or even a thousand years from now, but Christ is going to return!  When He does, only those who have accepted Him as Lord will be saved (Acts 4:12).

            If we want to save a dying world, our only recourse is to stand in the gap for them.  God wants all of them to be saved (I Timothy 2:4).  That includes those who hate us, those who slander us, and those who persecute us.  No exceptions!  We must be the watchmen on the walls for all of them.

            Our mission as Christ followers is to pursue Christ’s mission.  That mission is to take the Gospel to the whole world.  It means speaking up and speaking out.  It requires us to speak the Truth in love, and it begins on our knees.  Prayer is how revival begins, and we are living in a country and a world that is desperately in need of revival.  Before the walls of our nation begin to crumble further, it’s time that we take our place as the watchmen on the walls.    As we pray, God will lead us to the next step.  We can’t give up.  We can’t stop fighting.  The need is too great and the mission too important.  Our prayer must be: “Send revival.”  Revive our hearts that we will stand tall, no matter the risk or the consequences.  It’s all about saving souls.  Saving our nation is just the icing on the cake.

My Dad

                 Yesterday would have been my father’s 98 th birthday.   He’s been gone for 13 years, and I still miss him.   He wasn’t perfect, but he loved his family.   His letters home while he was in the service reflect his love for my Mom—Mandy, as he called her.   They were married for almost 65 years, and his love for her was never more evident than when she became sick in 2007.               As Mom underwent several surgeries due to an infection that ravaged her body, he was always by her side.   He became her primary caregiver as well as the cook, house cleaner, and laundry person, but you never heard him complain.   When she went to the hospital with another round of pneumonia, he was right there, remaining by her bedside until just a few hours before he died.             His lov...

Jesus Prays to His Father

                 A few weeks ago, I wrote about the need to “abide” in Christ.   I think every Christian desires to develop that deep, intimate relationship with our Savior.   That is the definition of “abide.”   The question is always, “How do we do that?”             This week my Bible study group looked closely at John 17, which I believe allows us to examine the deep, intimate relationship between the Father and the Son.   As Jesus prays, not a prayer of teaching as is found in Matthew 6, but a prayer of love and devotion to His Father and the “Mission”, we get a glimpse of what it means to “abide” in God or Christ.             He begins the prayer with humility, seeking glory for Himself only so that the Father might be glorified.   His mission of bringing salvation to the world was done.   ...
