The Search for Satisfaction
Why is it so hard to find satisfaction in this life?
I
think the answer is that we weren’t made for this world. Solomon tells us that God “has planted
eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of
God’s work from beginning to end” (Ecclesiastes 3:11b NLT). We weren’t made for this world, so to find
satisfaction, we need to know why we were created.
Only
the Scripture can answer that question.
Paul
tells us that all things were created by God and for God (Colossians
1:16). So, we were created for God’s
pleasure. Our Father desires a
personal relationship with every one of us because that brings Him
pleasure. That doesn’t mean that He
needs us or that we are His equal. It
simply means that we can bring Him joy.
So,
how do we do that?
At
the very end of Ecclesiastes, Solomon says, “Here is the conclusion of the
matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty
of man” (Ecclesiastes 12:13 NIV84). We are called to obey Him.
Finally,
John says this in Revelation, “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to
receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things and by your
will they were created and have their being” (Revelation 4:11 NIV84). We were created to give Him the glory and
honor that He deserves.
The
only way we're going to find satisfaction in this life is to first believe that
Christ is the Son of God and then accept Him as our Lord and Savior. But to truly find the satisfaction that Jesus
brings, we must live our lives devoted to glorifying the One who created us,
obeying Him, and honoring Him in the way that we live our lives.
David
said it like this, “1O God, you are my God, earnestly
I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary
land where there
is no water” (Psalm 63:1 NIV84). Satisfaction in this life is fleeting because
our souls are longing for God! Jesus
Christ is the Bread of Life, and only He can provide the Bread that gives eternal
satisfaction. Obeying Him and giving Him honor and glory should be our life
goals!
