An Open Letter to the President
Dear Mr. President,
I recently heard you say “If I can
save 7,000 people a week from being killed…I want to get to heaven. If I can get to heaven, this will be one of
the reasons.”
As much as we appreciate your
efforts to obtain peace throughout the world, and especially in Ukraine, I
would be remiss as a Christian, if I did not tell you that “good works”, even
if it means saving 7,000 lives a week, will not get you to heaven. There is only one way, and that is Jesus
Christ.
On the day of Pentecost, after
Christ had risen from the dead and ascended back into heaven, Peter addressed the
crowd gathered in Jerusalem. After
recounting Jesus’ life on earth, and His death, burial and resurrection, Peter told
the crowd, “Repent and be baptized every one of you, in the name of Jesus
Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38 NIV84). About 3000 people came to know Christ as Lord
that day. That same message still rings
true today.
In Acts 4, Peter made it even more
clear that Jesus is the only way to heaven. “Salvation is found in no one
else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be
saved” (Acts 4: 12 NIV84). Paul adds
to Peter’s explanation with these words, “For it is by grace you have been
saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by
works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2: 8, 9 NIV84).
There is no doubt that you were placed in your position as
leader of the United States for a reason.
No authority exists unless God establishes it (Romans 13: 1). Perhaps, you are in this position for the
purpose of saving 7,000 people per week by ending the war in Ukraine. If you are successful, that action may win
you the Nobel Peace Prize, but it will not get you to heaven.
I pray that you will seek guidance
from some of the Spiritual leaders who surround you, that you will study God’s
Word, and that you will come to the realization that Jesus is the Way, the
Truth, and the Life. No man comes to the
Father except through Him (John 14:6). Heaven
is within reach, but only through the blood of Jesus Christ!
