The Leap of Faith!
During my prayer time this morning, I was prompted to consider Hebrews 11: 11 and give praise for the way that God moves in our lives even in difficult circumstances. As I reread the “Faith Chapter”, I began to think about what “faith” looks like. The writer of Hebrews tells us that faith is, “…being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see” (Hebrews 11: 1 NIV84). My thought was, what does faith in action look like?
Abel’s faith was reflected in his
choice to give God the first fruits of his labor. His wise choice displayed his righteousness
(Hebrews 11: 4). Enoch’s faith was
simple—He pleased God (verse 5). He is a
reminder to us that we can’t please God without faith (verse 6).
The faith of many others was displayed
by their obedience in stepping out into the unknown. Noah built a giant boat when he had never
seen rain (verse 7). Abraham uprooted his
family and went, even though he didn’t know where he was going (verse 8). He
also followed God’s instructions and would have sacrificed his son if God had
not stopped him (verses 17 – 19). Rahab,
the prostitute, risked everything to hide the Israelite spies (verse 31). She had only heard of the power of God, but
she chose to trust Him.
As the Hebrew writer says, we could
go on and on, but the real question is: When
was the last time I was willing to step out in faith for God? When did you last show your faith? I must admit it’s been a while, but I can
look back on my life and say, without hesitation, that when I did take that
giant step, God blessed me! When I finally
placed my law practice in His hands completely, He opened a whole new area of
service that brought me 20+ years of joy and blessings. When I reluctantly (okay, it was more like “kicking
and screaming”) agreed to go on a mission survey trip to the Mideast, He again
blessed me in many ways. I felt the
leading of the Holy Spirit like never before, and I had such peace that I was
even able to sleep through a 7-hour taxi ride of “chicken”. (If you have ever been to the Mideast, you
know what I mean.)
My point is that when we are willing
to take that giant leap of faith, venturing out into the unknown, God delivers
in magnificent ways. What’s your next “leap”? I don’t know what mine looks like, but I pray
that when He says, “Jump”, I’ll just say, “How high?”
