My 300th Post!

             A little over two and a half years ago, I started this blog.  Today marks my 300th post.  When I shared that milestone with a friend, her reaction was, “I would rather go to the dentist than write anything much less 300!”  I offered to do her writing if she would go to the dentist for me, but unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way.  The good news is that I love to write, but I was surprised when I realized this was the 300th edition of Musings from My Sun Porch.

            When I began this blog, I had been retired for about nine months, and while, with the help of friends, I had overcome my initial hatred of retirement life, I was still lost.  If you have read my very first post, you’ll understand that I viewed retirement as a loss of purpose with no structure or daily schedule.  I know that those of you who haven’t had the privilege of retiring yet wish that you could have changed places with me.  However, for someone who has worked since she was in high school and has always been busy with other activities as well, no plans or purpose is a nightmare.  Ultimately, I found other activities, including exercise, Bible study, reading, and watching my great-nephews play ball, which helped to fill the void, but there was still something missing.

            One day, while listening to a podcast, God challenged me to do something new—something I had always wanted to do—write.  So, I began my quest to figure out how to write a blog.  Writing it was the easy part.  Figuring out how to get it online was like trying to design a rocket ship for someone who is technologically challenged.  After many attempts, I was finally successful and Musings from My Sun Porch was born.

            This blog has allowed me to share thoughts and ideas that God has prompted.  It has kept me in His Word regularly, and it has helped me to develop a more intimate relationship with my Savior.  Along the way, He has prompted me to write two books, and in the future, I hope to have a website where I can add some book reviews since I’m an avid reader as well.

            This blog has been a learning experience for me, and I hope that there were at least a few times when God spoke to you through the thoughts and ideas that He gave me.  If you are planning to retire, start looking for what new adventures He might have in store for you.  I promise that once you put your future in His hands, He is going to take you on a great journey.  Mine started on my Sun Porch!

Is there a "Banana Cake" for you in 2025?

                 Most families have at least one Christmas tradition.   Our family is no exception.   One of our traditions when I was growing up was my Mom’s banana cake.   She only made it once a year, at Christmas time, and the whole family loved it—even my Father who was a very picky eater.   Once the cake cooled, Mom would cut it down the middle and then hide half of it.   She wanted to make sure that we would still have some when friends or family dropped in.   We knew better than to search for her hiding place, and she knew that if she didn’t hide part of it, we would eat it all.               When my Mom got sick and could no longer bake the cake, my Dad decided that it was my job.   As my closest friends know, I am not much of a cook—although I’ve seen some improvement since I retired.   That first year was a disaster.   Th...

Freedom Isn't Free!

             On Christmas night, 1776, George Washington engineered a surprise attack on Britain’s German allies, capturing 1000 Hessian troops.   The story of him and his troops crossing the icy Delaware that night gave hope to a new nation fighting for its life.   Regrettably, the celebration was short-lived.   Just a week later, the enlistments of most of his troops were ending, and it seemed unlikely that they would stay to continue the fight for freedom.   As he faced that prospect, Washington lined up his troops and offered this plea. “My brave fellows, you have done all I asked you to do, and more than can be reasonably expected; but your country is at stake, your wives, your houses and all that you hold dear.
