Invasion of the Cicadas!
If you live around Louisville, Kentucky, then you know that we have been invaded by the Cicadas. These little beady-eyed creatures with small antennae and wings appear every 13 to 17 years, depending on their species. Perhaps the thing that makes them stand out from all other bugs is their “singing”—and I use that term loosely. I have a grove of trees behind my house, and they have continued their chorus of songs over the last week to the point that it has almost become a “white” noise that I barely think about. Notice that I said, “Almost”.
As I listened to them during my
prayer time this morning, their “music” made me wonder what their purpose is. Why did God create them? I’m not a biologist by any stretch of the
imagination so I guess there is some place that they fit in the “food chain”
but I can’t help but think that they are just one more way that God has chosen
to surprise us with His creation. Think
about it. We take for granted the ants, the
butterflies, and all the other insects because they are constantly with us, but
it will be years before we will see the cicadas again. When they arrive the next time, just like
this one, we will all be talking about these strange little creatures, and
hopefully, we will be reminded that they are part of God’s creation.
Still, I can’t help but wonder about
their purpose. There are various parts
of God’s creation that I don’t understand.
Things like, “Why did He have to create mosquitos?” and “What did Noah
do with the woodpecker on the ark?” You
may have lots of other questions, but we’ll have to save them for a lazy day in
heaven. Until then, they are each a reminder
of how magnificent and special God’s creation is. Every creature is unique, and while we may
not understand their purpose, we can’t ignore the Cicadas. Hopefully, their music will help to make us
more observant of the rest of His creation and give Him thanks for delighting
us with so much for us to see and hear.
Look around you. What you see could only have been created by
the God who is King of kings and Lord of lords!
Our Father is the Creator God!
Give thanks to Him for allowing us to be His special creation, made in
His image to glorify Him.
“1In the beginning God
created the heavens and the earth. 27For God created man in his own
image, in the image of God he created him; male and female, he created them. 31God
saw all that he had made, and it was very good” (Genesis 1: 1, 27, & 31 NIV84).
AMEN!
