Walking with God on the Road Ahead

For the last few weeks, we’ve all seen the “congratulations” signs on the lawns and some of you have probably already attended a graduation or two.  Tomorrow, my oldest nephew, Braylen, will graduate from North Bullitt High School.  It seems like only yesterday that he was attending preschool, and now he’s a young man about to embark on life’s journey.  I’m so proud of him!

As they step out into a whole new world, what words of wisdom do we need to give to our graduates?  We’ve all heard a few—things like, follow your dreams, make wise decisions, be careful with your finances, and work hard.  There’s no doubt that those are some of the keys to a good life, but I think there is so much more.

Life will not be perfect so it’s unfair for us to paint that kind of rosy picture for our graduates.  Yes, there will be victories and good times, but there will also be each person’s share of problems and disappointments.  We must prepare our graduates for both the victories and the disappointments.

So, where do we start?  I have learned the hard way that unless you start with God, things may spin out of control quickly.  Here are some things that we know about God:

He has great plans for us, plans to give us hope and a future (Jeremiah 29: 11).

He prepared good works in advance for us to do (Ephesians 2: 10).

He gives us the strength to do anything He calls us to do (Philippians 4: 13).

He will never leave us or forsake us (Deuteronomy 31: 6).

He can do immeasurably more than we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3: 20).

As we celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates this month, let’s encourage them to find their strength and their hope in God.  Following Him won’t let them escape from the disappointments and heartaches but He will walk with them every step of the way.  He will be their guide if they will let Him, and the road ahead will be a lot easier with Him by their sides.

I’m praying that my graduate will go and be all that God planned for him to be, walking hand in hand with Christ.  That’s the real secret to a joyful life!
