Introducing "Life Rules for My Graduate"

             If you are graduating or know of someone who is, I invite you to check out my latest book, Life Rules for My Graduate: Wisdom at the Crossroads.  The paragraphs below are excerpts from the introduction.  The Life Rules included are: Start with God, Remember You Didn’t Get Here Alone, Choose Your Life Companions Wisely, Preserve Your Integrity, Seek Wise Counsel, Think Before You Speak, Lead with Humility, Don’t Just Dream, Work Hard, Be a Blessing, and Listen for God’s Voice.

 “Graduation signifies the completion of one stage of your life. You are now at one of many crossroads that you will face during your lifetime. The decisions that you make in the coming months may very well affect your life for decades to come. The problem is that making decisions at life’s crossroads is not always easy.  Just know that there may not be a right or wrong answer. Your whole life is before you. It is an adventure that will be filled with challenges. The key is in trusting God to keep you on the right track, regardless of which path you take at the crossroads.

Solomon was the wisest person who ever lived. He wrote the book of Proverbs for the specific purposes of “attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair; for giving prudence to the simple, knowledge and discretion to the young—let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” (Proverbs 1:2–5 NIV84).

Similarly, in the next pages, I want to give you ten rules that I believe can help to provide wisdom and discipline and show you what is just and fair, even in the most difficult situations. These rules will serve you well in making your “crossroads” decisions. If you focus on these rules, God will walk beside you, and you’ll find that He is more than able to handle any detours that you may choose” (Excerpts from the Introduction).

            My Prayer is that every graduate will be the best that God designed them to be!

My Dad

                 Yesterday would have been my father’s 98 th birthday.   He’s been gone for 13 years, and I still miss him.   He wasn’t perfect, but he loved his family.   His letters home while he was in the service reflect his love for my Mom—Mandy, as he called her.   They were married for almost 65 years, and his love for her was never more evident than when she became sick in 2007.               As Mom underwent several surgeries due to an infection that ravaged her body, he was always by her side.   He became her primary caregiver as well as the cook, house cleaner, and laundry person, but you never heard him complain.   When she went to the hospital with another round of pneumonia, he was right there, remaining by her bedside until just a few hours before he died.             His lov...

Jesus Prays to His Father

                 A few weeks ago, I wrote about the need to “abide” in Christ.   I think every Christian desires to develop that deep, intimate relationship with our Savior.   That is the definition of “abide.”   The question is always, “How do we do that?”             This week my Bible study group looked closely at John 17, which I believe allows us to examine the deep, intimate relationship between the Father and the Son.   As Jesus prays, not a prayer of teaching as is found in Matthew 6, but a prayer of love and devotion to His Father and the “Mission”, we get a glimpse of what it means to “abide” in God or Christ.             He begins the prayer with humility, seeking glory for Himself only so that the Father might be glorified.   His mission of bringing salvation to the world was done.   ...
